If you are a driver regulated by the FMCSA and had a violation under DOT drug and alcohol rules, returning to work can be difficult—even after you complete the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) program. Many drivers struggle to get hired again, and the Return-to-Duty (RTD) process can feel confusing and stressful. The RTD test is required by DOT rules and is usually arranged by an employer or, for owner-operators, a third-party administrator. This can be frustrating when employers are unwilling to help with this step.
The good news is that the FMCSA allows another option for drivers who do not currently have an employer. By following specific steps, you can still complete your initial Return-to-Duty test. We guide you through the entire process, help complete the required testing, and ensure your results are properly reported to the FMCSA Clearinghouse.
The DOT urine drug test checks for amphetamines (including methamphetamine and MDMA), cocaine, opioids (such as heroin, codeine, morphine, and oxycodone), PCP, and marijuana. Testing is completed at federally certified laboratories, with confirmatory testing when required. All results are reviewed by a licensed Medical Review Officer, and the program includes the RTD test and full reporting to the FMCSA Clearinghouse.
